Mononucleosis, also known as mono, is a caused by the Epstein-Barr
virus. This is a virus that causes a person to experience fever,
swollen glands, sore throat, and extreme fatigue. It is most common in
young teens and young adults. Known by the nickname, the kissing
disease, mono is contagious and can be spread through the exchange of
saliva. It can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. Some
unfortunate people have the symptoms for several months.
Mono is treated at home with bed rest and simple treatment of the
symptoms. Over the counter pain medicine, salt water for the throat,
and other simple treatments will help a person to get back on their
feet as quickly as possible. People often wonder can you get mono
twice, and the answer is normally, no. Once you have the virus, you
will always be a carrier of the virus. It will usually stay dormant in
your body for the rest of your life. However, it can become active
from time to time. This usually does not cause the carrier to have
symptoms again, but they can become contagious again.
The rare person will develop symptoms of mononucleosis again. If
this happens, they should seek medical treatment because this could be
a sign of a different illness. It is always best to get the advice of
a medical professional if you suspect an initial case of mono or if
you feel the mono is recurring. Mononucleosis can be damaging to the
spleen, so sufferers should be aware of this and take note of any
extreme pain.
Mononucleosis is not a fun or easy way to get out of school or
work. If you are diagnosed with this virus, take care to follow all of
your doctor's instructions and keep yourself away from others to avoid
infecting them, as well. Hopefully, within a week, you will be back on
your feet and never have to worry about mono again. Just remember, it
will always be inside of your body, and there is a possibility of
spreading it years down the road to someone around you.
